Thinkware F800 PRO

Design

The F800 PRO features a sleek black finish with a stylish, yet discreet design. The LED notification light can be disabled in the settings, and it has well-placed buttons for ease of use. Weighing in at just 104.5g (.23lbs), the F800 PRO is deceptively light, especially when seems lighter than it appears, but it is still a hefty package on the inside.

Thinkware F800 PRO

Specs

With the brand new Ambarella A12 processor, the F800 PRO is capable of running any task such as parking mode, time-lapse recording, memory card partitioning, and Full HD front/ rear recording. Featuring Dual CMOS Sony Starvis Sensors on the front and back, you can rest assured that you'll capture everything in front of you, whether it's day or night.

With a 140 degree wide lens angle, you're able to capture a lot more of what's in front of you and also what's behind you as well. The F800 PRO supports Memory Card sizes of up to 128GB, for ample recording storage. Of course, it has built-in GPS and Wi-Fi for use with the Thinkware Viewer app.

Features

Parking Mode

The Thinkware F800 PRO features 3 different settings for Parking Mode Recording: Motion Detection, Time Lapse, and Energy Saving Parking Mode. These dedicated parking mode configurations will help maximize any parking situation.

Motion Detection

Motion Detection

This is our preferred parking mode setting. It enables the F800 PRO to record when there is any activity such as moving cars or pedestrians as well as impact event recording.

Even something as fast yet small as a bird swooping by the camera can trigger motion detection. This technology reduces memory consumption since it doesn't record when nothing is going on around your car.

Motion Detection is the ideal choice for a user who wants to keep track of everything that's happening while at work, out grocery shopping, or simply running an errand. We're glad to see it's becoming more and more of a standard in today's dash cams.

Motion Detection

Time Lapse

This parking mode is ideal for those who will park their car in a busy area and know that motion detection will almost always be triggered. The increased recording rate ensures that your memory card will fill up and your footage will be overwritten in no time on Motion Detection.

By recording 2 frames per second in Time Lapse mode as opposed to 30 frames per second in Motion Detection mode, you are reducing the amount of footage that needs to be recorded in the same period of time. As an example, 1 hour of front/rear video in Time Lapse mode will take up 720MB as opposed to a motion detection clip of the same length, which would take up almost 5GB of storage!

Time Lapse parking mode can be great for documenting complete parking sessions as well as providing a quick way to review recorded footage faster and without detail loss. It is the ideal choice for anyone that is looking to capture more but doesn't have the necessary storage space to do so.

Motion Detection

Energy Saving

New and exclusive to the Thinkware F800 PRO is the addition of an energy saving parking mode which focuses on using as little power as possible. Similarly to Motion Detection, it only activates when triggered, as opposed to constantly recording. Unlike Motion Detection, the only activity that triggers Energy Saving mode recordings are G-sensor based, meaning impact detection only.

This parking mode configuration reduces power consumption by 1/3, allowing the F800 PRO to last 3x longer than when in motion detection mode. The F800 PRO remains in a “sleep” state and once the G-sensor detects an impact, it wakes up within a second to record for the next 20 seconds.

This not only allows the F800 PRO to record for a longer period of time, but it ensures that what’s being recorded is crucial evidence without the extra footage before the event.

Cloud Features

Geo-Fencing allows the F800 PRO to send you push notifications via the mobile app, Thinkware Cloud. This is great for keeping track of your car if you let your kids take it to the mall, if your parents borrow it for the day, or if you were to simply lend it out. Whatever the case, this feature works by setting a designated home “zone”. This Geo Fence Zone can be set by typing an address or pinning the map on the Thinkware Cloud app. The radius of the zone can be anywhere from 100m to 600km. Once set, the F800 PRO will notify you through push notifications if the vehicle were to leave and/or enter the set zone.

"Locate my vehicle" is another related function which allows you to view the F800 PRO's current location (updates every 10 seconds). Connecting this to "find your car" is advantageous as it helps the dash cam track the last known location of the vehicle.

Driving Impact notifications activate when an impact over 3G or 4G occurs to the car while driving. A push notification is sent to the user’s smartphone via Thinkware Cloud. This enables them to respond immediately if they had lent out the vehicle.

ADAS System

The F800 PRO includes a full line-up of ADAS features. These features can be quite useful and can help promote safe driving practices. We'll be looking at these ADAS features: Safety Camera Alert, Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS), Forward Collision Warning System (FCWS), Urban Forward Collision Warning System (UFCWS) & Front Vehicle Departure Warning (FVDW).

  • Safety Camera Alert

Warns the driver of red light speed cameras by using the internal GPS for accurate location tracking.
  • Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS)

Alerts the driver if their vehicle goes slightly off lane. This can be set to trigger while at speeds over 50km/h.
  • Forward Collision Warning System (FCWS)

Calculates the distance of the vehicle in front of you and will issue a warning when you are approaching the vehicle in front too closely. This is programmable for speeds over 30km/h.
  • Urban Forward Collision Warning System (UFCWS)

Activates while going under 30km/h in busy areas and issues a 3-level warning to the driver.
  • Front Vehicle Departure Warning (FVDW)

Will inform you when the vehicle in front has begun moving when your car is stopped at an intersection or in traffic.

4 Autonomous Recording Modes

The F800 PRO features 4 autonomous recording modes: continuous recording, incident recording, manual recording & energy saving mode.

Continuous mode is activated after igniting the engine and videos are saved in one-minute segments. Incident recording stores the video data 10 seconds prior to and after a collision once registered by the 3-axis G-Sensor. Manual recording can be used to capture events that occur suddenly in front of your vehicle. Last but not least, Energy Saving mode where the Dash cam goes to sleep and will wake up within a second and record when an impact is detected by the g-sensor.

High-Temperature Protection System

Thinkware takes great care of its tech, so we also see an inclusion of their high-temperature protection system. The thermal sensor of the F800 PRO shuts the device off automatically when operating at unsafe temperatures above 60° Celcius or 140° Fahrenheit.

Video Quality

The video quality on the F800 PRO performs well in the day and at night. With Wide Dynamic Range and Auto-Exposure compensation, flares and bright lights are a problem of the past. Even in the dimmest of areas, enabling Super Night Vision 2.0 paired with the Sony Starvis Sensors guarantees you’ll capture everything ahead and behind you.

Super Night Vision 2.0

Super Night Vision 2.0 improves upon version 1.0 by allowing it to be enabled in all recording modes. This provides you with clearer video quality, even in extreme low-light conditions with excellent noise control.

Advanced Video Clear Technology

This feature includes software-based processing with features such as Wide Dynamic Range, which reduces excessively bright spots in the recording in order to retain colour detail and ensuring a clear image. Night Time Picture Quality Correction, which has brightness/colour control and noise cancellation running at all times. Automatic Exposure works in conjunction with WDR, this function controls the level of light exposure to maintain vivid and clear video across all the recordings.

WiFi App

The WiFi App allows you to access various settings for your Dash Cam such as video, parking mode recording, memory card partitioning, firmware updates as well as recording sensitivity options. Check out the Wi Fi App Walkthrough for more information.
