VIOFO VS1 Mini Review
Our advice on the VS1 Mini’s compact design, front-only coverage and parking setup
Who is the VS1 Mini for?
The VIOFO VS1 Mini 2K is our suggestion if you want compact, screen-free front recording and are comfortable using a phone for setup and playback. It records one view. A rear camera cannot be added to turn this model into a two-channel system.
The small body is a good fit when you want a tidy windshield and are comfortable using your phone instead of an on-camera screen. We would choose a different system for rear coverage, cabin infrared recording or remote viewing while away from the car.
Small body, adjustable mount
Start with VIOFO’s approximate dimensions of 3.03 × 1.31 × 1.23 inches, or 77 × 33 × 31 mm, when planning your mounting position. We recommend allowing extra room for the mount, power connector and access to the memory card.
Before attaching the camera, use the app to check the view and adjust the bracket to aim its fixed lens. Leave the mirror housing and factory sensors clear. The lens still needs an unobstructed view through the glass, even with a compact camera.
There are two physical controls: Video Protect locks the current recording, and MIC switches audio recording on or off. The VS1 manual assigns a five-second Video Protect press to Wi-Fi and a MIC press of at least eight seconds to formatting. Back up your clips before formatting and learn these controls while parked.

2K recording, HDR and reflections
The VS1 records 2560 × 1440 at 30 FPS with a Sony STARVIS 2 IMX675 sensor. VIOFO lists a 140° field of view and F1.6 aperture. Its HDR setting helps balance bright and dark areas; check the app because the current manual lists HDR off by default.
Resolution alone does not tell you whether a moving plate will be readable. Lighting, relative speed, distance, glare and the camera’s aim all affect the result. We recommend reviewing original clips from your own installation in daylight and after dark to see what it captures. The promotional artwork here is not a recording test.
VIOFO offers the optional CPL-400 polarizer for the VS1 to reduce reflections. If glare is your concern, start with that exact filter and check the image after fitting it. Confirm compatibility before ordering; a polarizer does not remove water from the windshield or guarantee a reflection-free picture.

Parking mode and the HK5 kit
Choose the recording behavior
For movement-triggered parking recording, start with Auto Event Detection. Buffered recording depends on the supported firmware and settings, so we recommend checking saved clips after setup. Use those clips to confirm timing rather than applying the timing printed on older artwork to your camera.
Time Lapse saves selected frames without audio. Low Bitrate records continuous video and audio in smaller files. Choose the coverage that suits where you park, then check how much storage that mode uses.
Choose compatible parking power
The VIOFO HK5 hardwire kit is the model-specific kit we recommend for the VS1. A USB-C connector by itself does not establish compatibility. The supplied socket adapter is suitable for driving power; parking recording needs a correctly installed continuous-power setup.
We recommend setting the cutoff and parking timer around your vehicle and parking routine. Available power, battery condition and settings determine recording duration. A cutoff reduces the risk of excessive discharge, but cannot guarantee that every vehicle battery will start the engine.

Phone access, GPS and saved footage
The VS1 uses the VIOFO app on iOS or Android. Enable the camera’s Wi-Fi, join its local network on your phone, then open the app to view recordings or change settings while parked. The 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz options provide a local connection; they do not give the camera an internet connection or cloud access.
For an important recording, we recommend downloading the clip to your phone or computer and checking playback before you share it. Transfer speed varies with the phone, radio conditions and file size. You can also switch the camera off, remove the card and use a compatible card reader.
Built-in GPS can add position and speed information to recordings when a signal is available. Set the time zone and check the timestamp, including after daylight-saving changes. GPS logging is not a live vehicle-tracking subscription.
The VS1 supports microSD cards up to 512 GB. Check the selected bundle for any included memory card. Back up important footage before formatting, because formatting erases the card. Use a suitable endurance card and check that loop recording and saved event files work.

Voice commands and recording alerts
Useful supported commands include “Lock the Video”, “Take Photo” and “Turn On WiFi”. The manual also lists Video Start and audio on/off commands. Voice commands are separate from spoken notifications about the camera’s status.
We recommend learning the physical controls alongside voice commands, because road noise can interfere with recognition. Match the command language to the supported system language. Keep your attention on driving and stop somewhere safe before troubleshooting a missed command or changing settings.
If recording or card warnings repeat, check a recent file and the status indicators. Receiving power alone does not tell you that the camera is saving footage correctly.

Plan the installation around your vehicle
The installation instructions allow direct adhesive mounting or the supplied optional static sticker on suitable glass. Clean the mounting area, position the lens within the wipers’ sweep, and keep the camera and cable clear of controls and airbag deployment paths.
Use the supplied adapter in the vehicle’s 12 V or 24 V socket for driving power. For hardwiring, the selected circuits, fuse taps and cable route must suit the vehicle. Our dash cam installation guide explains the available approaches. If you are unsure about a circuit or trim panel, we can help you work out the next step before installation.
If you are considering an alternative position, check the view and image orientation first. VIOFO’s cabin-facing taxi example shows one possible VS1 placement; it does not establish infrared night recording or a mounting method for every vehicle.
