VIOFO A229 Plus 2-Channel 2K QHD Sony STARVIS 2 Dash Cam

Elevate your road safety with the VIOFO A229 Plus, the value king of the A229 series. Featuring dual Sony STARVIS 2 sensors, this dash cam records crisp 2K QHD video from front and rear, ensuring license plates are legible.

With advanced HDR, 5GHz Wi-Fi, and hands-free Voice Control, it delivers premium video quality without the premium price tag.

Double the Clarity with Dual 2K QHD

The VIOFO A229 Plus sets a new benchmark for mid-range dash cams by offering 2K QHD (1440P) resolution for both the front and rear cameras. Unlike traditional systems that pair a good front cam with a weak rear unit, this dashcam ensures that rear-end collisions are captured with the same high-definition precision as the road ahead.

This balanced approach provides a comprehensive safety net. Whether you are driving on a busy highway or backing out of a tight spot, the 2K resolution captures sharper details than standard HD. This ensures smooth video playback and makes it easier to read road signs and license plates in your video quality.

Advanced Sony STARVIS 2 Technology

At the heart of the A229 Plus are two powerful STARVIS 2 IMX675 image sensors. These next-generation sensors are specifically engineered to deliver wider dynamic range and superior light sensitivity compared to their predecessors. This results in a cleaner Sony STARVIS 2 IMX675 image with less noise in low-light conditions.

By equipping both channels with Sony STARVIS 2, VIOFO ensures consistent performance all around your vehicle. While the flagship A229 Pro uses 4K, the A229 Plus proves that 2K paired with a superior Starvis 2 sensor delivers professional-grade clarity that rivals many more expensive dashcam models.

Enhanced Night Vision with HDR

Driving at night can be challenging for cameras due to the contrast between dark roads and bright headlights. The A229 Plus utilizes advanced HDR (High Dynamic Range) technology to solve this. It automatically balances the exposure, toning down bright lights and boosting dark areas to reveal hidden details day and night.

This is critical for capturing evidence at night, as it prevents license plates from being "washed out" by your own headlights. Whether you are in a dimly lit parking garage or on a pitch-black country road, the A229 Plus ensures your night vision footage is clear and usable from both the front camera and rear camera.

Smart Connectivity and Voice Control

The A229 Plus is designed for modern convenience. It features a built-in Quad-Mode GPS Module for precise tracking and upgraded 5GHz Wi-Fi, allowing for incredibly fast video downloads to your smartphone via the VIOFO app. You can review footage or share clips instantly without removing the SD card.

Safety is further enhanced by the built-in Voice Control. You can keep your hands on the wheel and simply say commands like "Lock the video," "Turn on audio," or "Take photo." The dashcam also provides spoken notifications, keeping you informed of its status so you can focus on driving.

24/7 Parking Surveillance

Secure your vehicle even when you are away. When paired with the optional Hardwiring Kit, the A229 Plus activates its intelligent parking mode. Features like Buffered Auto Event Detection automatically save footage 15 seconds before and 30 seconds after an impact, giving you the full picture of an incident.

The system also supports Time Lapse and Low Bitrate recording for long-term monitoring. To maximize your parking mode duration without impacting your vehicle's battery, consider adding a dedicated battery pack like the BlackboxMyCar PowerCell 8.

FAQs

What is the difference between the A229 Plus and the A229 Pro?

The primary difference is resolution. The A229 Pro records in 4K Front + 2K Rear, while the A229 Plus records in 2K Front + 2K Rear. Both use Sony STARVIS 2 technology, but the A229 Pro offers higher resolution for the front camera. The Plus is a fantastic value for those who want excellent dash cam performance without the 4K price.

What SD card should I use?

We recommend using a high-endurance MicroSD card designed for dash cams. The A229 Plus supports a MicroSD card up to 512GB. A high-quality SD card is crucial for reliable parking mode recording and handling the high data rates of dual 2K video streams.

How do I install the rear camera?

The rear camera attaches to your rear windshield using the included adhesive mount. You connect it to the front unit using the provided 6-meter cable. For detailed instructions on routing the cable through your vehicle, visit our Dash Cam Installation Hub.

Does this camera have a battery or a supercapacitor?

The A229 Plus uses a supercapacitor instead of a lithium battery. Supercapacitors are much more durable and heat-resistant, making the dashcam safer and more reliable in extreme temperatures compared to older battery-powered dash cams.

Does the Voice Control work offline?

Yes, the Voice Control is processed locally on the dash cam. You do not need to be connected to the VIOFO App or the internet to use commands like "Take Photo" or "Lock the Video."

Will this drain my car battery in parking mode?

If you use the VIOFO HK4 Hardwire Kit, it features a built-in voltage cutoff. This protects your vehicle by shutting off the dashcam if the battery voltage drops too low. However, for extended parking mode use, we suggest using a dedicated battery pack.

Where do I insert the MicroSD card?

The MicroSD card slot is located on the side of the main front and rear unit. Please format the SD card inside the camera before first use to ensure file system compatibility.

2021 Ford F 150 Viofo a229 Review

The camera system was easy to install in my Ford Truck. I Love it considering purchasing another one for my wife’s Honda

Thanks for the review, Jerome! We’re glad to hear the A229 Pro was easy to install in your F-150 and that you’re loving it. We think it's a great choice for your wife’s Honda as well.

Works great, easy to use

The video quality is good, app easy to use to change settings or access videos without removing the SD card. I used the hard wire kit to make the most of the parking mode feature (had to get help to install the rear cam due to interior back panels being stubborn). Device fits right behind my mirror and doesn't obscure any visibility (2017 Acura rdx). The interior cam fit slightly above the mirror and can be seen, but there is nothing that can prevent that. Im not sure the interior cam is worth it for my use case, but overall I can recommend this camera unit.

Thanks for the detailed review! We’re glad to hear the A229 Pro has been easy to use and that the app and parking mode features are working well for you. It’s great to know the fit behind the mirror worked nicely in your Acura RDX, and we appreciate you sharing your honest thoughts on the interior camera as well.

Another great Viofo cam

Had a 129 Pro duo that I left in a vehicle I just sold and put this A229 in my new truck. So, there was no learning curve and I got the install done pretty easily. However... I used a 3rd party adapter/power supply that plugs into an existing socket in the overhead for a factory dashcam and that did not work out great for the Viofo. Turns out that when the vehicle does an auto stop and then restart at traffic lights the dashcam would reboot. Apparently, power is cut to that circuit when the starter engages and that is enough to drop the cam offline and cause a reboot. Another however... if you turn the cam's GPS off this problem does not occur. But then you lose speed overlay and route history.

The bottom line is that you really need to use the Viofo hardwire kit if you want this to work reliably... unless and until someone makes an adapter than can buffer these power transients. And the hardwire kit really is easy to install.

Good camera maybe

I have had this for a few weeks, still having trouble le getting videos thru the app, needs wifi but vehicle wifi takes over and wont let connect. Wifi doesn't stay on would be nice if it did or it connected thru Bluetooth. Install was a little confusing but I ended up finally getting it and figuring out what camera went where. I cannot use the rear camera as the connection wire is not long enough for my truck no matter what way I run the chord so thats a little frustrating having a camera I cannot use

Thanks for the detailed feedback, David. We’re glad to hear you were able to get the installation figured out, but we’re sorry the app connection and rear camera cable have been frustrating. For the WiFi connection, if your vehicle WiFi is taking over, this is usually because wireless Apple CarPlay or Android Auto is active. Those systems capture your phone’s WiFi connection, so turning them off before connecting to the VIOFO app should allow the dash cam to connect properly. You can turn them back on once you are done using the app. For the rear camera cable length, please reach out to our team and we’d be happy to look over your vehicle setup and see what options are available.

A small learning curve

A small learning curve because some features weren't apparent doing the buying process. Overall love it. It doesn't want to connect to Galaxy Tab 8, so my cell phone it is.

Thanks for your review, Deryck! We’re glad to hear you’re loving the A229 Ultra overall. There can definitely be a small learning curve with the features at first, and if you’d like help with the Galaxy Tab 8 connection, please reach out to our team and we’d be happy to troubleshoot. If there’s anything else we could have done to make your experience a full five stars, feel free to let us know.

10/10 Happy Customer

Works as advertised. I've had it for a couple weeks now. Resolution is great and licence plates are usually easy to read. FWIW I got the CPL filters for both front and rear.
Convenient features like wireless video transfer, scheduled HDR on/off, and one-touch mic on/off. Sleek design too. I haven't tested night videos or voice commands yet.
It's a big investment compared to my previous $60 camera, but the quality so far is well worth the price. I wish I bought this thing years ago.
Shoutout to BBMC for having the best price online + super fast shipping! I ordered on a Saturday and it arrived the following Tuesday.

Thanks for the amazing review! We’re glad to hear the A229 Plus has been a big upgrade for you and that you’re enjoying the video quality and features. Great call adding the CPL filters as well. We really appreciate the shoutout and are happy we could get it to you quickly.

So far the quality seems pretty good! Only downside is the app/apps for the Viofo Dashcams

So far the quality seems pretty good! Only downside is the app/apps for the Viofo Dashcams. I dont expect them to be perfect or great, but the first day i had access to the live preview and all of a sudden it stopped working on day 2 of being installed. The other thing is the VHB falling off the rear view camera (it stuck well to the window but its falling of the plastic of the camera). Other than that its working well. Quality during day and night good thanks to the STARVIS2

Thanks for your feedback, Joshua. We’re glad to hear you’ve been happy with the video quality overall. For the app side, we recommend using only the newer VIOFO Dashcam app with the red icon, as that is the current app that's actively being updated, and many connectivity issues can often be resolved with a few simple setup adjustments. As for the rear camera adhesive, if the spare mounting adhesive included in the box does not resolve the issue and it keeps happening, that would be covered under warranty. Please feel free to reach out to us and we’d be happy to help.

Mixed feelings.....

My experience is mostly my fault. I didn't realize that the camera was constantly drawing power from the batteries while in park mode. I thought that the unit mainly went to sleep and was awakened by any g-force type bumping that occured, which would save batter power. Jeeps are battery hungry vehicles. If you draw down the auxiliary battery too many times the main battery will also die and vice versa. I opted to have the unit shut down completely because of this misperception. Which basically defeats having the parking mode. Although I can turn it back on if I am parking in a questionable area. Also it definitely takes hours to install the front, back and parking mode cables. And since there isn't any definitive guide available you are left with watching YouTube videos to try and figure an installation strategy. It may be worth while to have it installed by someone that does these kinds of installations on a regular basis. Other than the above the camera works as expected.

Thanks for your detailed feedback. We understand where the frustration is coming from, especially with how parking mode was expected to behave. In a proper setup, the camera should not drain the battery to that extent, even on vehicles like Jeeps. It’s often related to how the hardwire kit is configured. The yellow wire should be connected to switched ACC power and the red wire to constant power. It’s also important to check the low voltage cutoff, we typically recommend setting it to 12.2V to help prevent battery drain. Setting a parking mode timer on the camera can also help limit how long it stays active. If you’re aiming for a setup that only records on impact, you can use auto event detection and lower the motion sensitivity to zero so it behaves more like a sleep mode until a trigger occurs. We agree installation can take some time, especially for a first setup, and professional installation is always a good option for a cleaner and more optimized result. If you’d like, feel free to reach out and we can help review your setup to make sure everything is configured properly.

Misleading defintion of product it says two channel, but not really!

Misleading defintion of product it says two channel, which in all of your other dash cams denoyes front and rear coverage but this is just two channel front coverage even thogh the telephoto camera says rear camera right on the camera and instructions

Thanks for your feedback, Chuck. We’re sorry for the confusion here. In dash cam terminology, “channels” refers to the number of cameras included in the system, not the direction they face. The product listing did not imply otherwise. That said, we understand how this could be confusing, especially since most 2-channel systems are front and rear. We’ll take a closer look at how we present this to make it clearer for future customers. If you were intending to purchase a front and rear setup instead, feel free to reach out to us and we’d be happy to help with the next steps.
