Compact Design

Over 30 Hours of Uninterrupted Parking Mode Recording

The BlackboxMyCar PowerCell 5 is the ideal solution for drivers who need consistent power for their surveillance systems. With a 51.2 Wh capacity, this battery pack provides up to 16 hours of continuous energy for a standard 2-channel dashcam, or over 30 hours for a single-channel unit. It ensures your vehicle remains protected during work shifts or overnight parking without relying on car batteries.

By utilizing this external battery pack, you eliminate the wear and tear on your vehicle's electrical system. This setup ensures that your dash cam maintains full parking mode functionality, capturing every incident without the risk of a dead car battery in the morning.

Fast Charging via Hardwire or Cigarette Lighter

Designed for the daily commuter, the PowerCell 5 is built to fully charge incredibly fast. When you use the included cable to connect via the cigarette lighter socket (12V–15V), the unit charges in about 65 minutes. For even faster results, you can hardwire the unit to your fuse box, achieving a full charge in as little as 33 minutes.

This efficiency means you don't need to drive for hours to generate enough power. Whether you are running a simple commute or a long road trip, the system manages input intelligently, prioritizing your dashcam while the battery pack recharges rapidly in the background.

Versatile Power Station with USB

The PowerCell 5 is more than just a dedicated dash cam battery pack; it serves as a versatile hub. It features two USB-A ports and a powerful USB-C port. This allows you to output 5V or higher to fast-charge smartphones, tablets, or even laptops directly from the battery pack while you are in the vehicle.

This flexibility makes it an excellent companion for mobile professionals. Unlike a standard hardwire kit that only serves the camera, the PowerCell 5 adds utility to your vehicle's interior. You can keep your dash cams running while simultaneously charging your mobile devices, all from one compact source.

Safe LiFePO4 Technology for Hot Climates

Safety is paramount when installing electronics in your vehicle. The PowerCell 5 utilizes premium LiFePO4 (Lithium Iron Phosphate) cells. This chemistry is renowned for its thermal stability, capable of withstanding extreme temperatures without the risk of fire or explosion associated with standard lithium-ion batteries found in phones or generic power banks.

In addition to safety, LiFePO4 batteries offer superior longevity. They can endure thousands of charge cycles, ensuring that your battery pack remains a reliable part of your vehicle's security setup for years to come. This durability is essential for maintaining constant voltage delivery to high-end 4K cameras.

Compact Stealth Installation

Space is often at a premium in modern vehicles. The PowerCell 5 features a slim design that makes it easy to hide under a seat or in a glove compartment. Its small footprint allows for a clean installation, whether you are using the cigarette lighter adapter or a hidden hardwire connection.

Despite its size, it is built with a durable metal casing for protection. It works seamlessly with major brands like VIOFO, Thinkware, and BlackVue dash cams. For installation help, visit our Dash Cam Installation Hub.

Compatibility Notes

Compatibility Note: The BlackboxMyCar PowerCell 5 is designed strictly for 12V–15V vehicle systems. It is not compatible with 24V power systems commonly found in heavy-duty trucks, semi-trailers, or commercial machinery. Connecting this unit to a 24V system may cause permanent damage to the battery pack and void your warranty.

What is the difference between the PowerCell 5 and PowerCell 8?

The PowerCell 8 has a larger capacity and includes Bluetooth for app connectivity. The PowerCell 5 is more compact and includes a unique USB-C port for charging devices, but it does not have Bluetooth or an app. It is a streamlined battery pack focused on efficiency.

Will this battery pack work with my dash cam?

Yes, the PowerCell 5 is universally compatible. It works with any dashcam brand, including BlackVue, Thinkware, and VIOFO. It replaces your vehicle's battery as the power source for parking mode, ensuring your camera runs safely.

How do I install this into my car?

You have two options. You can use the cigarette lighter cable for a simple plug-and-play setup. For a cleaner look and faster charging, we recommend using the input cable to hardwire it to your fuse box. You can find guides on our website.

Does this provide enough power for a 4K dashcam?

Absolutely. The PowerCell 5 provides stable 12V output, which is perfect for high-resolution 4K dash cams. It can power a dual-channel 4K system for approximately 16 hours in parking mode.

Can I chain multiple batteries together?

No, the PowerCell 5 is a standalone unit and does not support an extension battery pack. If you need longer duration than 30 hours, consider the larger PowerCell 8.

How do I check the battery status without an app?

The PowerCell 5 features built-in LED indicators on the unit itself. These lights display the current charging status and remaining power, allowing you to monitor the voltage levels and charge state at a glance.

Is it safe to leave this in my car during summer?

Yes. LiFePO4 technology is designed to withstand high heat much better than standard lithium batteries. This battery pack is built to operate safely in temperatures up to 140ºF, making it ideal for hot climates.

Can I install the PowerCell 5 in a truck or commercial vehicle with a 24V system?

No, the PowerCell 5 is not compatible with 24V systems. It is engineered to operate within an input voltage range of 11.5V to 15V. For vehicles with 24V electrical systems (such as some semi-trucks or buses), you would require a voltage converter to step the power down to 12V before connecting it to the battery pack. Using the device directly with a 24V source will result in hardware failure.

So far a great product gives me peace of mind

So far a great product gives me peace of mind. I think the timer function is its best feature for me. I make short trips for shopping mostly and the rest of the time my car is parked in the garage. The timer function allows the camera to stay on for a set amount of time only so it doesn’t drain the battery fully, sitting in the garage. Note the USB inputs in the front of the unit are not controlled by the timer function. You need to access the rear plug for this feature.

Thanks for your review, Christine! We’re glad to hear the PowerCell 5 is giving you peace of mind and that the timer function has been especially useful for your driving habits. We appreciate you pointing out the USB port behaviour as well.

Solid Performance So Far

On my 3rd day using the PowerCell 5 with my BlackVue DR590X-2CH, and so far, it’s been great. The cold weather here in Manitoba does make things more challenging, but the battery is holding up well. I’m getting over 10 hours of parking mode recording, and since it only records when motion is detected, it helps conserve power instead of running continuously. Overall, a solid investment for protecting your vehicle without draining your car battery.

Thanks for the detailed review, Dexter! We’re glad to hear the PowerCell 5 is performing well for you, especially in colder Manitoba conditions. It’s great to know you’re getting solid parking mode coverage without putting strain on your vehicle’s battery.

Things to note

The item works, somewhat. I am using both USB and USB-C ports, plugging in 3 different cameras. Depending on your power consumption needs for each camera, it might not balance the power needs correctly. In my case, the USB-C plug-in for one of my cameras draws more power, which ultimately turns off my other two in the long run. I might have to choose between using the USB or USB-C ports only.

Thanks for taking the time to share your experience. The PowerCell 5 is designed primarily to support a single dash cam system, and with its 4,000 mAh capacity, running multiple cameras can lead to significantly shorter-than-advertised runtimes. Your observation about power draw differences between ports is helpful and accurate, and we appreciate you pointing that out for others who may be considering a similar setup.

How would i connect this to a viofo a329 that is connected with a Dongar classic mirror tap

BlackboxMyCar

The Dongar mirror tap would need to be bypassed, as it does not provide the correct input for charging the PowerCell 5. The battery pack should be powered using its included 12V cable or hardwired to the fuse box, then connected to the VIOFO A329 using the VIOFO hardwire kit and the PowerCell 5’s unspliced output cable. This setup allows the battery pack to power the camera properly in parking mode without drawing from your vehicle’s battery.
