The BlackboxMyCar Circuit Tester is a test light for checking vehicle fuse-box power before a dash cam hardwire installation. Its ground clip and fine probe let you check exposed fuse test points and compare circuits with the ignition on and off.

Check for power before connecting a hardwire kit

Attach the clip to a suitable ground and touch the probe to the fuse’s exposed metal test point. The lamp lights when power is present and the ground connection is secure. Compare the same circuit with the ignition on and off to help identify constant and accessory-switched power.

Use the vehicle’s fuse diagram and your hardwire kit’s instructions when choosing a connection. Avoid safety-critical circuits, including airbags and engine controls. Our hardwiring guide explains the installation process.

What does the circuit tester tell me?

The lamp indicates power at the probe point when the ground connection is secure. It helps you check fuse-box circuits before wiring a dash cam.

How do I connect the ground clip?

Attach it to a suitable unpainted metal ground point near the fuse box. Follow your vehicle and installation instructions, then use the probe on the exposed fuse test point.

Can it help identify constant and accessory power?

Yes. Check the same circuit with the ignition on and off. A constant circuit remains powered; an accessory-switched circuit changes with the ignition. Some vehicles keep accessory circuits awake temporarily, so confirm the vehicle’s shutdown behaviour before making the connection.

Does it display a voltage reading?

No. This is a test light rather than a meter with a numerical display. Use an appropriately rated multimeter when you need a measured voltage.

Does the Essential Install Package include one?

Yes. The Essential Install Package includes a circuit tester along with installation supplies. Review that package if you need more than the tester.

The circuit tester made it easy to determine which fuses were constant and which were switched with the ignition. It also helped verify that the PMP’s wiring harness was getting a good connection to the add-a-fuse. Lastly, it helped me determine which bolts provided a good ground and which ones didn’t.
