What infrared cabin recording does

An infrared cabin camera uses an IR-sensitive image sensor with an infrared light source to record the interior in low light. The LEDs provide illumination; they are not the sensors that turn the scene into video.

This is different from thermal imaging, which detects heat radiation. An illuminated cabin recording is not a heat map, and infrared is not a guarantee of visibility through every obstruction or in every weather condition.

Which views do you need?

IR systems are not limited to two channels. A front-and-cabin system combines a road view with an interior view; a three-channel setup can add a separate rear view. Check the exact kit rather than assuming that every secondary camera is infrared.

If you need to review incidents or driver concerns, consider cabin footage as part of your taxi, rideshare or fleet setup. It does not prevent every incident, guarantee savings or determine legal or licensing outcomes. Review the recording, audio and passenger-notice requirements for your intended use.

Before settling on a position, we recommend checking a saved cabin view with your seating layout. Seats, occupants, distance, mounting position and illumination affect what is visible; a wide-angle specification does not guarantee that every face or detail will be recorded.

Can a cabin IR camera record through glass?

IR illumination can reflect from nearby glass or other surfaces and interfere with the image. The result depends on the camera, illumination, mounting and surroundings. Do not assume that glass always blocks infrared or that an inward-facing camera will provide a useful road view through a windshield.

For the exterior view, we suggest a road-facing camera fitted according to its instructions. Before relying on an alternative position, check a saved clip in the lighting you expect. IR footage can render colours differently from ordinary daylight video, including a largely black-and-white night view on some models.

Infrared illumination, STARVIS and HDR are different

Sensor names such as STARVIS and processing features such as HDR or a manufacturer’s night mode do not by themselves establish that a camera emits infrared illumination. A low-light road camera and an IR-illuminated cabin camera solve different recording needs.

Consider the Thinkware U3000 as a road-camera example. Use its exact specifications when comparing it: a “Super Night Vision” label does not promise infrared cabin coverage. Available light, lens, settings and scene conditions still matter.

For a dark cabin, look for a compatible camera with IR illumination suited to the view you need. Within its illuminated area, IR can support recording with little or no visible cabin light. It cannot guarantee readable detail at every distance or throughout the vehicle. We advise checking saved images and supported IR settings, because night-vision labels do not describe every system the same way.

Example: VIOFO A229 Pro 3CH

The VIOFO A229 Pro 3-Channel is a front, rear and cabin system. The manufacturer’s exact 3CH specification lists 4K front, 2K rear and 1080P interior recording at 30 FPS with HDR. Its cabin camera uses a Sony STARVIS IMX307 sensor and IR illumination.

Choose this A229 Pro 3CH configuration when you need front, rear and cabin views, then assess each channel separately. It is distinct from other A229 generations and does not guarantee plate readability. The rear camera and IR cabin camera are different units with different jobs.

The manufacturer describes automatic IR activation in low light. Match the supplied cabin camera and settings to the exact version; do not copy LED counts, lens construction or included accessories from another version. We suggest reviewing the seller’s exact kit for a CPL filter and other accessories before ordering. This guide does not promise a free item or current stock.

Example: BlackVue DR970X-2CH IR Plus

The BlackVue DR970X-2CH IR Plus is a front-and-interior example. BlackVue’s February 2024 announcement describes a 4K front camera with a Sony STARVIS 2 IMX678 sensor and an interior camera whose IR illumination responds to ambient light.

For the DR970X-2CH IR Plus, compare the manufacturer’s close-to-180° cabin view with the coverage you need in your vehicle. We advise checking actual coverage rather than relying on the angle alone. Low-light recording does not promise every detail will be visible, and day and night colour rendition can differ.

The separately named DR970X-2CH Box IR Plus is another configuration to investigate. Do not transfer the cylindrical model’s mounting, kit or installation requirements to a Box system merely because the names are similar.

If you need remote live view, remote playback, backup, alerts, event uploads or driving reports, confirm the exact camera, registration, vehicle-side internet connection and applicable service. A local Wi-Fi connection alone does not supply those remote functions, and no upload is guaranteed during a loss of power or connectivity.
