Best Settings for the BlackVue DR590X-2CH Dash Cam

Tune recording, sensitivity and parking controls for your DR590X-2CH

We recommend adjusting one setting at a time and checking a saved clip before moving on. This guide uses BlackVue's 2020 manual for the original DR590X-2CH; the DR590X-2CH Plus is a separate model. Match your camera and firmware when following menus or choosing an update.

Open the camera's settings

To follow the 2020 manual's phone workflow, start in your phone's Wi-Fi settings. Connect to the camera's network, open the BlackVue app, choose Wi-Fi and use the settings icon to open Firmware settings. After a change, return to that menu and save. Check the app's instructions if its screens differ from the illustrated 2020 workflow.

You can also change settings in BlackVue Viewer on a computer. Unplug the camera's power cord before removing or inserting its microSD card, then connect the card through a reader. Turning the engine off alone may leave a camera powered for parking recording.

Set the clock and video quality

Choose your time zone and apply daylight saving time when it is relevant. The manual allows GPS time sync or a manually entered date and time. GPS is an optional external accessory on the DR590X-2CH; do not assume a camera without that accessory can receive GPS time. Back up recordings before saving a clock change.

Both channels have fixed 1080P FHD recording at 30 FPS. Image quality changes the bitrate rather than the resolution. BlackVue lists three paired front/rear quality tiers. Wi-Fi streaming can run at a different frame rate, so judge the recording from a saved clip.

Swipe or use the Left and Right arrow keys to read the table.

Image quality Front bitrate Rear bitrate
Highest 12 Mbit/s 10 Mbit/s
High 10 Mbit/s 8 Mbit/s
Normal 8 Mbit/s 6 Mbit/s

We suggest starting with High, then comparing a saved front and rear clip before deciding whether you need Highest. Higher quality creates larger files and takes longer to copy. Export your recordings before saving an image-quality change.

Enhanced night vision can be enabled in the video settings. Front and rear brightness have separate controls. Compare saved nighttime clips with night vision on and off; change one camera's brightness at a time so you can see its effect.

Choose what each recording includes

Normal recording saves driving footage. Turning it off stops normal-mode recording. The video segment length is fixed at one minute. Voice recording controls the microphone: when it is off, the camera does not record audio.

The date and time overlay can be switched on or off. Choose km/h, MPH or no speed display. If a camera was installed upside down, front camera rotation turns its image 180 degrees; the rear orientation control can rotate the rear image 180 degrees or mirror it.

Lock event files protects impact events from being overwritten by newer recordings. The manual limits locked files to 50. When that space fills, review and export the files you need before freeing space, or enable the option to overwrite the oldest locked events. Formatting still deletes locked files.

Set up parking recording and power

Use a suitable hardwiring cable or parking-mode battery for recording after the engine is off. With Parking mode recording enabled, the manual describes entry when ACC+ turns off with a hardwired installation, or after five stationary minutes when the G-sensor controls the switch. Confirm how your installation supplies power before relying on it.

Motion and Impact detection saves a parking clip when movement appears in the camera's view and a separate event clip when the G-sensor detects an impact. With rear parking recording enabled, both cameras record. If it is disabled, the rear stops five minutes after parking mode starts and resumes in normal mode.

With the hardwiring cable, Battery Protection supplies power while ACC+ is off and shuts the camera down at the selected voltage or timer cutoff. The manual says disabling that protection stops operation when ACC+ is off. Choose cutoff values for your vehicle and installation; a cutoff does not guarantee that a battery cannot discharge. A separate parking battery has its own power and charging instructions.

BlackVue parking-mode video

Adjust impact and motion sensitivity

Normal and parking modes have separate G-sensor sensitivity controls. The sensor measures movement along three axes and triggers an event when movement crosses the threshold. If routine bumps create too many events, adjust the sensitivity and review saved footage. Setting impact sensitivity to off disables events triggered by impact detection.

Motion-detection parking mode buffers video and saves a recording when it detects movement. You can adjust motion sensitivity to reduce triggers from minor movement such as wind or rain, taking the camera's surroundings into account. The Viewer's advanced sensitivity settings let you compare recorded video and G-sensor data while adjusting the threshold for each axis.

Set indicators, alerts and camera preferences

The recording-status LED, front security LED in normal mode, front security LED in parking mode and rear security LED have separate on/off controls. These switches change the indicators. The 2020 manual also lists parking-mode LTE and Wi-Fi LED controls; LTE relates to its optional external connectivity setup.

The parking-impact voice alert reports an impact when you leave parking mode, but ignores impacts detected within the last three minutes before exit. That limit concerns the announcement. Announcement volume is separate from microphone recording, so use the Volume control for voice guidance.

Scheduled Reboot can be enabled or disabled, and you can set its time. The manual describes one daily reboot while parked and says the camera skips it if it is recording at that time. Choose a time that fits your use instead of treating the illustrated default as a required setting.

Speed alert lets you set a limit up to 300 km/h or 200 MPH. When the camera detects speed above that limit, it beeps and records an event, then returns to normal recording after the event file. Check the optional GPS setup before using features that depend on speed data.

User text overlay accepts up to 20 characters using English letters, numbers and the permitted symbols. It appears at the top left of the video. Firmware language changes the camera's audio announcements; the language of the BlackVue Viewer interface is a separate preference.

Manage the camera's Wi-Fi

You can change the Wi-Fi network name and login password. The manual describes an auto-off option that turns Wi-Fi off after ten minutes without activity; disabling that option leaves Wi-Fi on. Choose according to how you connect to the camera, and keep your credentials available when changing them.

Historical Cloud Lite settings

BlackVue's 2020 manual describes Cloud Lite and push-notification settings with the optional CM100GLTE-M connectivity module and LTE-M carrier service. The dated menu lets you turn Cloud Lite off when you do not use it and choose when to receive push notifications. The manual notes that the module may not be supported in every country. Before using those settings, confirm with BlackVue whether your camera's firmware, module and carrier service are supported where you drive.

Check current service terms and compatible connectivity hardware with BlackVue before setting up online features. A direct Wi-Fi connection to your phone is separate from the internet connection used for online features.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change the DR590X-2CH's resolution?

The original manual specifies fixed 1080P FHD at 30 FPS for both cameras. Image quality adjusts bitrate. Check a saved clip rather than a Wi-Fi preview when judging recording quality.

Why did a settings change erase my recordings?

Saving a changed time or image-quality setting formats the card, including locked events. Export recordings before making either change. Event locking protects against routine overwriting, not formatting.

Why does the rear camera stop while parked?

When rear parking recording is disabled, the manual says the rear camera stops five minutes after entry into parking mode. It resumes in normal mode. Check that option and your power setup.

Does this guide cover the DR590X-2CH Plus?

This guide uses the original DR590X-2CH manual. Match your camera's exact model when choosing firmware or a manual, and use the instructions supplied for the Plus if that is your model.

Manual and firmware resources

Choose the download for the exact model on your camera. During a firmware update, keep power connected until the update completes. Unplug the camera before handling its microSD card.
