VIOFO A229 Plus 3CH 2K + 2K + 1080p Dash Cam

The VIOFO A229 Plus 3CH adds an infrared cabin camera to 2K front and rear recording. It suits drivers who need to document passengers as well as the road, including taxi and rideshare use. All three views record at 30FPS.

Front, Rear and Cabin Coverage

The front and rear cameras use Sony STARVIS 2 IMX675 sensors, while the interior camera records the cabin in Full HD with infrared assistance. In the three-channel configuration, all three views record at 30FPS. The front, rear and interior fields of view are 140°, 160° and 150° respectively. If you only need road coverage, the A229 Plus 2CH offers a different front/rear recording configuration.

HDR for Road and Cabin Recording

HDR helps retain detail in mixed lighting, including bright windows beside a darker cabin. The interior camera’s infrared illumination supports cabin recording at night. For windshield reflections, select the appropriate VIOFO CPL filter: CPL-200 for the front or CPL-300 for the rear. The interior infrared camera does not require a CPL filter. BlackboxMyCar Aqua Shield can be placed on the windshield; follow its installation guide to keep the camera view clear.

The cabin camera uses a 2MP Sony STARVIS IMX307 sensor with a 150° F1.8 lens. Infrared settings are Off, On or Auto; infrared footage is black and white. Current settings can enable the cabin camera during driving, parking or both.

Voice Controls and Spoken Status

Supported voice commands provide access to common recording and photo functions. Spoken notifications help you notice camera or memory-card issues. Configure the system while parked, then check footage from every camera after installation rather than assuming that all three angles are correct.

Voice commands support English, Chinese, Russian and Japanese; other interface languages use English commands. Spoken status notifications are separate from commands. Use the optional BTR200 remote if a physical clip-lock button is easier to reach.

Wireless Review and GPS Context

The VIOFO app connects over 2.4GHz or 5GHz Wi-Fi for reviewing and downloading recordings. Stop recording before changing camera settings, and resume recording afterwards. Built-in GPS adds speed and route information. All three channels share the microSD card in the main unit; supported capacity is up to 512GB. A compatible high-endurance memory card helps match storage to continuous multichannel recording.

A229 Plus connected to phone playback over Wi-Fi

Parking Modes and Installation

Choose buffered Auto Event Detection for triggered clips, time-lapse for a condensed view without audio, or low-bitrate recording for continuous video and audio in smaller files. The optional VIOFO HK4 hardwire kit supplies constant power, an ignition signal and a battery cutoff through the GPS mount’s USB-C port.

Current settings include three parking geofence zones and a Night Vision option for 1FPS time-lapse. For a separate parking power source, compare the PowerCell 8 battery pack with the matching VIOFO connection. Runtime depends on available power, cutoff settings, temperature and recording mode.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which views does this 3CH package record?

VIOFO A229 Plus 3CH supplies front, rear and infrared cabin views. The infrared cabin camera records passengers; it is not a telephoto camera. Choose VIOFO A229 Plus 2CH if you need only front and rear views.

Can I use 60FPS and HDR together?

No. With all three cameras connected, this Plus 3CH records 2K front, 2K rear and 1080p cabin at 30FPS. The two-channel Plus offers a front 60FPS option with HDR off.

How does the A229 Plus compare with the Pro?

The Pro uses an 8MP IMX678 front sensor for 4K video; the Plus uses a 5MP IMX675 front sensor for 2K. Both families offer 2K STARVIS 2 rear cameras and 1080p infrared cabin options. Compare the A229 Pro 3CH for the higher-resolution front alternative. Choose the channel package for the views you need.

How does the cabin camera work at night?

The 1080p camera uses a 2MP Sony STARVIS IMX307 sensor, F1.8 lens and 150° view. Its infrared LEDs can be set to On, Off or Auto; infrared recording is black and white. The cabin sensor is STARVIS, while the front and rear use STARVIS 2. Current settings can enable cabin recording during driving, parking or both.

Are the hardwire kit and memory card included?

No. Choose a high-endurance microSD card up to 512GB and the VIOFO HK4 hardwire kit for parking power. Both front and rear CPL filters are separate purchases. The BTR200 remote is optional. The short USB-C data cable is for file transfer and updates, not the normal vehicle power lead.

Which CPL filters fit this configuration?

Front CPL-200 is optional. Rear CPL-300 is optional. The infrared cabin camera does not need a CPL. Select the exact fit on our VIOFO CPL filters page. Adjust the filter while checking the recorded view to reduce dashboard reflections.

How do I power parking recording?

Connect the optional HK4 to constant power, ignition and ground, using the GPS mount’s USB-C power input. Match fuse taps to the vehicle and check ignition switching after installation. The current manual also supports HK6; a vehicle-voltage stamp requires HK6. A switched vehicle socket cannot keep recording once it stops supplying power.

Which parking modes can I choose?

Choose buffered Auto Event Detection for triggered clips, time-lapse without audio, or low-bitrate video and audio. A Night Vision option is available with 1FPS time-lapse. These are the A229 Plus modes; do not use instructions for the A329 family’s hybrid or low-power impact standby.

What does parking geofencing do?

You can set up to three zones where the camera powers off instead of entering parking recording, such as a private garage. Outside those zones, or with weak or lost GPS reception, it enters parking mode. Check the zones in your own installation before relying on them.

Can I watch the camera while away from my vehicle?

No. The 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi connection works with a nearby phone. GPS adds information to saved recordings. This model has no built-in LTE or cloud service for remote viewing, live vehicle tracking or push parking alerts.

Which voice languages are supported?

English, Chinese, Russian and Japanese commands are supported. With other interface languages, use English commands. Voice commands can lock a clip, take a photo and operate common controls; spoken status notifications report camera or memory-card problems separately.

What does privacy mode retain?

It keeps only the latest 6 ordinary files for this 3-channel configuration. Leave privacy mode off when you want the normal recording history. Export important clips before changing recording settings or formatting the card.

Can I record to an external SSD?

No. This A229 Plus records to a microSD card, with supported capacity up to 512GB. The USB-C connector does not add the A329 family’s external-SSD recording feature. All connected cameras share the card in the front unit.

Should I update the front and rear firmware together?

Use the BlackboxMyCar manuals and firmware guide and select A229 Plus. The front and rear use different files. VIOFO explicitly says not to update a functioning rear camera with its listed rear release; follow support instructions if troubleshooting a rear-camera problem. Back up clips and settings, maintain power and recheck recording, HDR, audio and parking after a front update. Current front instructions warn against downgrading.

What warranty comes with this new package?

The new VIOFO A229 Plus 3CH includes an 18-month manufacturer warranty. Refurbished products have their own listings and warranty terms. Read our warranty and returns terms for coverage and the claim process.

2021 Ford F 150 Viofo a229 Review

The camera system was easy to install in my Ford Truck. I Love it considering purchasing another one for my wife’s Honda

Works great, easy to use

The video quality is good, app easy to use to change settings or access videos without removing the SD card. I used the hard wire kit to make the most of the parking mode feature (had to get help to install the rear cam due to interior back panels being stubborn). Device fits right behind my mirror and doesn't obscure any visibility (2017 Acura rdx). The interior cam fit slightly above the mirror and can be seen, but there is nothing that can prevent that. Im not sure the interior cam is worth it for my use case, but overall I can recommend this camera unit.

Thanks for the detailed review! We’re glad to hear the A229 Pro has been easy to use and that the app and parking mode features are working well for you. It’s great to know the fit behind the mirror worked nicely in your Acura RDX, and we appreciate you sharing your honest thoughts on the interior camera as well.

Another great Viofo cam

Had a 129 Pro duo that I left in a vehicle I just sold and put this A229 in my new truck. So, there was no learning curve and I got the install done pretty easily. However... I used a 3rd party adapter/power supply that plugs into an existing socket in the overhead for a factory dashcam and that did not work out great for the Viofo. Turns out that when the vehicle does an auto stop and then restart at traffic lights the dashcam would reboot. Apparently, power is cut to that circuit when the starter engages and that is enough to drop the cam offline and cause a reboot. Another however... if you turn the cam's GPS off this problem does not occur. But then you lose speed overlay and route history.

The bottom line is that you really need to use the Viofo hardwire kit if you want this to work reliably... unless and until someone makes an adapter than can buffer these power transients. And the hardwire kit really is easy to install.

Good camera maybe

I have had this for a few weeks, still having trouble le getting videos thru the app, needs wifi but vehicle wifi takes over and wont let connect. Wifi doesn't stay on would be nice if it did or it connected thru Bluetooth. Install was a little confusing but I ended up finally getting it and figuring out what camera went where. I cannot use the rear camera as the connection wire is not long enough for my truck no matter what way I run the chord so thats a little frustrating having a camera I cannot use

Thanks for the detailed feedback, David. We’re glad to hear you were able to get the installation figured out, but we’re sorry the app connection and rear camera cable have been frustrating. For the WiFi connection, if your vehicle WiFi is taking over, this is usually because wireless Apple CarPlay or Android Auto is active. Those systems capture your phone’s WiFi connection, so turning them off before connecting to the VIOFO app should allow the dash cam to connect properly. You can turn them back on once you are done using the app. For the rear camera cable length, please reach out to our team and we’d be happy to look over your vehicle setup and see what options are available.

A small learning curve

A small learning curve because some features weren't apparent doing the buying process. Overall love it. It doesn't want to connect to Galaxy Tab 8, so my cell phone it is.

Thanks for your review, Deryck! We’re glad to hear you’re loving the A229 Ultra overall. There can definitely be a small learning curve with the features at first, and if you’d like help with the Galaxy Tab 8 connection, please reach out to our team and we’d be happy to troubleshoot. If there’s anything else we could have done to make your experience a full five stars, feel free to let us know.

10/10 Happy Customer

Works as advertised. I've had it for a couple weeks now. Resolution is great and licence plates are usually easy to read. FWIW I got the CPL filters for both front and rear.
Convenient features like wireless video transfer, scheduled HDR on/off, and one-touch mic on/off. Sleek design too. I haven't tested night videos or voice commands yet.
It's a big investment compared to my previous $60 camera, but the quality so far is well worth the price. I wish I bought this thing years ago.
Shoutout to BBMC for having the best price online + super fast shipping! I ordered on a Saturday and it arrived the following Tuesday.

Thanks for the amazing review! We’re glad to hear the A229 Plus has been a big upgrade for you and that you’re enjoying the video quality and features. Great call adding the CPL filters as well. We really appreciate the shoutout and are happy we could get it to you quickly.

So far the quality seems pretty good! Only downside is the app/apps for the Viofo Dashcams

So far the quality seems pretty good! Only downside is the app/apps for the Viofo Dashcams. I dont expect them to be perfect or great, but the first day i had access to the live preview and all of a sudden it stopped working on day 2 of being installed. The other thing is the VHB falling off the rear view camera (it stuck well to the window but its falling of the plastic of the camera). Other than that its working well. Quality during day and night good thanks to the STARVIS2

Thanks for your feedback, Joshua. We’re glad to hear you’ve been happy with the video quality overall. For the app side, we recommend using only the newer VIOFO Dashcam app with the red icon, as that is the current app that's actively being updated, and many connectivity issues can often be resolved with a few simple setup adjustments. As for the rear camera adhesive, if the spare mounting adhesive included in the box does not resolve the issue and it keeps happening, that would be covered under warranty. Please feel free to reach out to us and we’d be happy to help.

Mixed feelings.....

My experience is mostly my fault. I didn't realize that the camera was constantly drawing power from the batteries while in park mode. I thought that the unit mainly went to sleep and was awakened by any g-force type bumping that occured, which would save batter power. Jeeps are battery hungry vehicles. If you draw down the auxiliary battery too many times the main battery will also die and vice versa. I opted to have the unit shut down completely because of this misperception. Which basically defeats having the parking mode. Although I can turn it back on if I am parking in a questionable area. Also it definitely takes hours to install the front, back and parking mode cables. And since there isn't any definitive guide available you are left with watching YouTube videos to try and figure an installation strategy. It may be worth while to have it installed by someone that does these kinds of installations on a regular basis. Other than the above the camera works as expected.

Thanks for your detailed feedback. We understand where the frustration is coming from, especially with how parking mode was expected to behave. In a proper setup, the camera should not drain the battery to that extent, even on vehicles like Jeeps. It’s often related to how the hardwire kit is configured. The yellow wire should be connected to switched ACC power and the red wire to constant power. It’s also important to check the low voltage cutoff, we typically recommend setting it to 12.2V to help prevent battery drain. Setting a parking mode timer on the camera can also help limit how long it stays active. If you’re aiming for a setup that only records on impact, you can use auto event detection and lower the motion sensitivity to zero so it behaves more like a sleep mode until a trigger occurs. We agree installation can take some time, especially for a first setup, and professional installation is always a good option for a cleaner and more optimized result. If you’d like, feel free to reach out and we can help review your setup to make sure everything is configured properly.

Misleading defintion of product it says two channel, but not really!

Misleading defintion of product it says two channel, which in all of your other dash cams denoyes front and rear coverage but this is just two channel front coverage even thogh the telephoto camera says rear camera right on the camera and instructions

Thanks for your feedback, Chuck. We’re sorry for the confusion here. In dash cam terminology, “channels” refers to the number of cameras included in the system, not the direction they face. The product listing did not imply otherwise. That said, we understand how this could be confusing, especially since most 2-channel systems are front and rear. We’ll take a closer look at how we present this to make it clearer for future customers. If you were intending to purchase a front and rear setup instead, feel free to reach out to us and we’d be happy to help with the next steps.
