2023 BlackVue DR770X Box 3-Channel Dash Cam In-Depth Review

When we heard about BlackVue launching the new DR770X and DR970X series, we were excited, although the form factors of these two dash cams are generally the same from their predecessors, the DR750X Plus and the DR900X Plus respectively.

But, when we heard about the DR770X Box, we got really curious! What’s the Box? Why did BlackVue create this? Who will benefit from this newly designed camera? Is it space-saving? How does it differ from the rest of the BlackVues? And the questions go on… until we finally get our hands on this beauty.

In this article, we will take a look at the all-new DR770X Box, the dash cam that we consider as the car thieves’ enemy number one. Find out why.

BlackVue DR770X Box Design

We find the DR770X Box is a revolutionary dash cam as we haven’t encountered any model designed like this. For the first time, BlackVue designed the DR770X Box to be a separate unit from the cameras, carrying the BlackVue dash cam's processor, WiFi source, and memory card.

Here, we found that the DR770X Box has three cameras - one each for the front, rear, and interior. The DR770X cameras are linked via coaxial video cable to the Box, which serves as the recording unit that can be safely stored in the glovebox or under the seat. This means the Box can be easily kept out of sight, preventing a thief from accessing it, while keeping your dash cam footage safe and private.

We also noticed that the DR770X Box allows a much smaller design for the front camera compared to a conventional dash cam, since all the components required to process and write the video feeds are embedded in the Box. In fact, the DR770X’s newly designed front camera, which includes a speaker and microphone, is the same size as the interior infrared and rear cameras. Because of its size, we also think it helps minimize overheating risks of a dash cam sitting on your windshield in the hot sun.

Tthe power cable and SD card slot are both protected by their own tamper-proof locking cover. Even besides the Box, each camera unit presents its own difficulty to break into, as all three of them come with their own tamper proof casing. This casing prevents the cabling from being unplugged, and the camera taken off the windshield.

We also found out that aside from these additional, physical protection, the BlackVue DR770X Box has innovated security with an alarm. Once the head unit itself has been disconnected from the Box unit, the Box itself will enter into an emergency mode, blaring loud and proud like a true car alarm - loud enough to scare those bad guys trying to break in!

We also love that the DR770X Box is the inclusion of a coin battery-powered, remote Bluetooth button that can be used to trigger Event recordings manually, as a way to easily bookmark important files.

BlackVue DR770X Box Image Quality and Recording Capabilities

Upon unboxing the DR770X Box, we are amazed with how BlackVue redesigned its front camera - which is far different from the tubular shaped front cams like the DR970X or DR770X. And although it’s built smaller, we can still say that it still delivers well.

Using 2MP Sony STARVIS image sensors, a world leader in imaging technology, the new DR770X Box is capable of capturing the front in full HD @ 60 frames per second, and full HD @ 30 frames per second for the interior and rear cameras. The front field of view is 139°, the rear is 116° while the interior covers 180° - the wider in its class.

Like the standard DR770X-2CH, the DR770X Box is also equipped with a new SigmaStar CPU and ISP Tuning software which are responsible for the improvements in white balance, dynamic range, and contrast in daytime videos.

And as far as bitrate choices go, there are four:

  • Highest/Extreme
  • Highest
  • High
  • Normal

While it is expected to capture clear full HD, the front camera also needs an accessory that can prevent rain droplets, dust, and other environmental elements from ruining the footage - that’s why we highly recommend you to get a BlackboxMyCar Aqua Shield.

Moreover, like the DR750X-2CH Plus, the DR770X Box only supports the H.264 codec. While we appreciated the additional compression provided by H.265, we recognize the compatibility issues that it raises.

BlackVue DR770X Box Installation

Unlike other dash cams that are usually visibly mounted on the windshield, or a suction cup mount on the dash, the DR770X Box can be installed discreetly. Aside from having a small camera, the Box can be hidden inside the glove compartment, so it’s easier to hide, and safer from predators.

If you want to make the most of the DR770X Box’s features, we recommend a hardwire installation or a dash cam battery pack like a BlackboxMyCar PowerCell 8 or a BlackVue Power Magic Ultra B-130X Battery. Hardwiring might require more effort in installing compared to the 12V Car Charger installation, but this can bring out the DR770X Box’s full range of features - including advanced parking mode. Every package of the BlackVue DR770X Box includes a hardwiring kit, so you don’t have to worry about purchasing one separately.

To set up parking mode, you must connect the DR770X Box to your vehicle's fuse box, connect the ACC+ cable to a fuse that turns on only when the engine is running, and connect the BATT+ cable to a fuse that stays powered even after the engine is off. Again, having a dedicated dash cam battery pack is another option, if you don't want to hardwire the dash cam to your vehicle's fuse panel.

BlackVue DR770X Box Parking Mode

While we were testing this dash cam, we always discovered something that proves how secure your car will be if you install the DR770X Box. Aside from keeping your video recordings safely stored, you also have additional protection with BlackVue’s advanced parking modes which keep an eye on your car 24/7.

When someone walks in front of any of the front, rear, or interior cameras that you have set around the car, you can be confident that the camera will record that motion footage, as well as any impacts or forcible entrances attempted. The BlackVue DR770X Box is on the case, whether it's some skulking around, casing the joint, or an act itself.

Similar to other BlackVue models, the DR770X Box also offers Loop Recording, Intelligent Parking Mode, Impact/Motion Detection, and Time Lapse Recording. Once the dash cam is hardwired or hooked up to a battery pack, it will switch to parking mode automatically when the car’s ignition is turned off. The DR770X Box comes with a built-in voltage monitor to protect your vehicle battery, and a voltage cutoff timer can be set in the BlackVue app.

In terms of operating temperature, it is also similar to the standard DR770X - ranging from -20 °C to 80°C or -4°F to 176°F. So, whether you’re living in a warm or cold region, the BlackVue DR770X Box is built to conquer the weather.
