What is a dash cam?

A dash cam stands for a dashboard camera that is mounted inside the vehicle, usually on the front windshield. A dash cam, depending on the model, can do many things such as record both when the vehicle is being driven and when it’s parked, record audio, provide a connection to a smartphone app so that video can be reviewed and saved on the spot, etc.

What is an IR dash cam?

An IR dash cam is a dash cam with infrared lights that provide recording details under poorly-lit conditions, as well as total darkness. These are dual-channel dash cam setups with a regular front-facing unit and a secondary unit that comes with infrared lights.

The secondary unit is typically mounted to face and record the interior of the vehicle, and thus is especially recommended for rideshare users, such as for Uber and Lyft, or for commercial use, such as fleet managers.

Why buy a premium dash cam?

What is parking mode?

Parking mode recording is a feature of a dash cam that keeps your dash cam recording footage even when the vehicle is off. Typically found only in premium dash cams, parking mode provides around-the-clock protection and surveillance for the vehicle.

What is Wi-Fi & GPS?

The wi-fi feature in a dash cam is what allows a smartphone to be paired to the dash cams. Unlike a regular wi-fi network signal that gives you internet access, the purpose here is just to connect the dash cam and smartphone together.

The GPS feature in a dash cam shows the vehicle’s speed and, for some models, the location of the vehicle with Google Maps integration.

[Signature Bundle] BlackVue DR900S-2CH + BlackVue B-124X Review

I waited to review until I found the time to get the equipment installed. Everything went as expected except clearance under the front seat was insufficient to install the battery in that location. The trunk provided the best option in a Mustang, and I suspect that would be the same for most cars in this category. I found that the installation was much easier than I expected, and the equipment furnished to accomplish it worked better than expected. The best part is everything works!!! All BlackBox staff members I either talked to or chatted with had the right information at their fingertips, and I received all the equipment I ordered earlier than expected and in perfect condition. I believe it was Mark I was chatting with on line, and the young lady I talked to on the phone just prior to my ordering really knew the equipment and made sure I ordered the correct fuse taps for my Mustang. I just wish I had written her name down at the time so she could receive proper recognition.

Awesome Dash Cam

Very happy with this Dash Cam , video quality is awesome. I was amazed how quickly I received the product, also in the package was a thoughtful hand written note from Murphy, thanking me for my order and support during this Covid pandemic, I hardwired the unit in my Silverado truck in a few hours, and it wasn't difficult at all. I would recommend watching a Thinkware installation video on YT which is more detailed of how to make the connections into the fuse panel.

Solid 5 Star Camera

Easy to install. Easy to connect to my iPhone and the app is a smooth navigation. Could check it live and save clips. Wish we could check it live if we aren’t in the car and connected to the dash cam’s WiFi but that’s cool. The quality is nice too. My first dash cam and I think I’ve made a great choice :D

VIOFO A129 : High Functionality at a Good Price Point

The install of any dash cam system will present the same challenges. Some vehilces will be inherently more difficult than others. I installed the system in my 2012 Jeep JK and because of the relatively open architecture of Jeeps, it was not (too) bad. Don’t count on YouTube videos for help with speciifc vehilces as even one model year difference can make a big difference in routing the wiring; for instance: where is the factory wiring pass-through hole in the firewall and which fuse do you piggy-back for ignition source only power? You will have to watch several videos and understand the architecture of your vehicle. I would definitely recommend the 3 wire hookup option (hard wired, not plug in) which allows for parking mode security. The system has the capability, so why not use it? I installed the two channel (front and rear) option. The system works as advertised, but you will have to play with it for a bit to get used to using the functions and menu. The WI-FI mode is a must have in my opinion and is easily acheived using the APP, which you must download. The VA129 has an integrated GPS, so no need for an external unit, allowing pictures and videos to be location stamped as well as time stamped (this is a must have feature). This system also uses capacitors rather than lithium ion batteries. There are several good videos that discuss the advantages, so I’ll leave that to you. Again, do your homework and I think you will find the the VIOFO A129 4K 2-channel system, with GPS, offers oustanding value and functionality at the price point.

Excellent quality and support

The VIOFO A129 Duo 4K met and exceeded my expectations completely. I originally had two individual cameras for front and back and thought it may have been time to upgrade after reading about some of the new cameras out there. After many hours of research I came across the BlackboxMyCar website and found not only excellent information and prices, but superb support based on the reviews. The order and shipment were easy and quick. I took a bit of time to install and had a minor issue with the parking kit. I emailed support with an issue related to the parking kit and they responded quickly and also sent out a replacement part extremely fast with no hassle. I was up and running in a very short time. After a bit more research on recommended settings and configurations on the VIOFO community forums, I have verified the recorded content and functionality and everything is working great. Blackvue 750

This is my first dash cam That's why I didn't get the 900. The parking mode feature is what I like. I cant believe the quality of the video feed its way better than I was expecting. Easy to install, highly recommend getting the fuse tap kit. I mounted the rear cam upside down ,it didn't matter you can rotate it 180 in the app. Glad I bought it now

Cellink New Extended Battery Pack

Sale and delivery from BlackBoxMyCar was great. Product as advertised. However, I was hoping I could charge the Cellink Neo Extended Battery Pack (EBP) separately from the main Cellink Neo 6 Battery Pack (MBP) that connects to the Thinkware U1000 but, while the EBP's connector fits the 12V charger cable for the MBP, it is not clear that it is safe to do so. No instructions or guidance provide on doing that. There is also no indicator light on the EBP to show that it is fully charged. My intention was to always keep the MBP in the car and the U1000 always active with it while parked and while the EBP was being charged at my residence.

Fast shipping, easy install, great HD dashcam

Over the past five years, I have bought 4 dashcams from blackboxmycar, three DR750S-2CH and one DR900S-2CH. Overall, I've been very happy with the product and shipping/service.

I use the cameras as another insurance policy, just in case if there's an accident on the road and someone points a finger at me. I have the DR750S cameras installed on 2014 Subaru Outback, 2020 Honda Passport, 2018 Subaru Crosstrek. I have the DR900S camera installed on a 2020 Honda Insight (previously had installed on a 2019 VW Golf Alltrack and 2018 Ford Expedition).

Blackboxmycar is my go-to store for dashcams now. Their shipping is very fast, with immediate notification of shipping, etc. Never had a problem with fulfillment from them. I think I had one question that I sent by e-mail regarding another product; they were very responsive. Their prices are very competitive. Their support via their YouTube channel is exceptional. In fact, I learned about their products via YouTube initially. Their install videos made me feel very comfortable about diving into doing a DIY install. After having done 6 of these installs myself (I installed one of these cameras in three different cars), I feel very comfortable doing another one or trouble-shooting any issues.

Blackvue cameras are great. Honestly, I wish I had other brands to compare so that I can say that they are the best, but these things are expensive, so once I had a Blackvue camera, I wanted to get Blackvue cameras for my other cars so that all I had to do was to deal with one company for any support issues and to use one app on my phone for working with the videos, etc. The videos are very clear, with better than adequate details for getting information for any potential accidents. Thank goodness, I never had to use the videos for any insurance or legal issues, but I'm confident that if I were in an accident, I would have more than adequate video evidence. Right now, I mostly use the camera to show my wife anything I saw on the road (mostly crazy drivers or people being idiots).

One issue that I had with the DR900 camera was possibly an overheating issue. This happened only once when I had the camera installed on a 2018 Ford Expedition (this car can be a big green house during the summer months). The camera kept restarting and did not work for awhile, and this was trouble-shooted to a potentially heat-damaged SD card. I replaced the SD card and had no issues since. Subsequently I had the camera installed on the VW and the Honda with no issues.

Again, I cannot see how you can go wrong with getting the Blackvue dashcam from blackboxmycar.

VIOFO A129 from BlackBoxMyCar meets expectations

Came earlier than expected, easy to install right out of the box. Been up and running for about 3 weeks with no issues. Has a bit of graininess in low-light or when driving fast, but otherwise video quality is great. Only thing I'd recommend (if intending to hard wire, like I did), is figuring out which fuse type you have and buying the right fuse adapters beforehand. I went to 5 auto stores before I found the micro-fuse adapters (2) that are required for my Tacoma.

Nice dashcam for the money

Last year I've bought the most expensive dash cam on a market - dual-channel Thinkware U1000 with CPL filter, radar, and smart battery for parking mode and I was really disappointed with both its build quality and videos it produces. U1000 dashcams from first batches all had signs of wear and tear as they explained from improper testing procedures. Video is not impressive either. Lots of glare on sides because of the window curvature (see the attached picture). Not sure though if any other internal car camera can do better. Night video quality is really bad, a lot of noise (see the attached picture), nowhere near Datakam 6 max.

For our second car, I decided to try VIOFO A129 Pro Duo Dash Cam with CPL filters. I haven't installed it yet, because I have to sort out other things with the car first, so I cannot compare video quality, but in terms of build quality and packaging, I give Viofo 5 out of 5 stars. Viofo CPL filter mount design is also so much better than Thinkware (which is a disaster). I don't know yet how well Viofo withstands summer heat, but Thinkware seems doing fine. After a few months when I finally install my Voifo dashcam I might update this review to add more information about video quality.

For those who think about buying a battery please think about the time it takes to fully charge it. A battery is useless until you drive long enough (>1 hour a day) to re-charge the battery.

good service and fast shipping

the filter is good to reduce light glare but i feel after installed the filter when filming in the dusk the edges of frame become a bit darker then before, should i just increase the ev value or any adjust i can do? thanks.

Hi Neil, thanks for shopping at BlackboxMyCar! The CPL filter does tend to saturate certain colours, so if you're finding that the edges of the frame are a bit darker than before, then we do recommend adjusting the brightness within the settings.

Viofo v3

Works great so far! Only had it running for about a week. Only down fall is it shipped via fedex. IMO FedEx sucks! They required a signature on this package. I was not home so they sent it to a facility 21 miles away. I was told to pick it up from there. So I paid $10 for shipping, then had to drive 42 miles round trip to pick this up from Milwaukee. Real pain in the ass. However, so far the product works great!
