Another accident involving one of our customers cars being backed into by a SUV a few weeks back, video was caught on his G1W-C/G1W-CB Dashcam.
Accidents involving someone backing into your car can be very troublesome without a witness. Incidents like these can be hard to prove whose at fault, and often times people use this to commit insurance fraud. In most cases the rear-ender is almost always found at fault and without any proof such as your dashcam then it can greatly affect your insurance rate. Again we see this type of insurance fraud was popular in Russia and many parts of Asia (see video example). The end result is almost always the con-artists getting away with some quick cash from an innocent victim.
While we suspect the lady in the Toyota was not trying to commit any sort of insurance fraud and was simply in a hurry to go somewhere, this type of claim can quickly escalate into a fraud situation. This could have been a costly for our customer if the lady in the Toyota did not admit fault and the ICBC claim was declared as 50/50.
In British Columbia, most passenger vehicles are insured by the same crown corporation, ICBC. Often times both parties in an accident are covered by ICBC which gives them an incentive to declare a claim as 50/50 so that both parties are at partial fault. In this case, the insurance premiums of both drivers can take a hit rather than just having one party at 100% fault. With ICBC, any party that is more than 25% at fault can see an increase in their insurance premiums (source).
In our customers case, when he made the claim with the lady admitting 100% fault and provided the video evidence to ICBC. This would have been fairly interesting to consider what would have happened to our customer if he had no dashcam or witnesses on the scene. We have heard many stories of "witnesses" suddenly coming forward with statements about what happened, these witnesses have the potential to sway a claim one way or another, basically committing fraud. From our perspective, the dashcam video evidence doesn't lie and it has proven time after time how they can curb insurance fraud.
