Dash Cam Installation Guide
Our advice on choosing power, planning camera placement and finding the right installation instructions
Choose the power method your setup supports
At BlackboxMyCar, we help you choose camera and power equipment for safety and peace of mind on and off the road. Start here to compare installation methods and find the next guide, then follow the instructions for your exact camera, power accessory and vehicle. BlackVue, Thinkware, IROAD and other brands can use different cables and settings, even between models from the same brand.
For help matching the equipment to your vehicle, contact our product experts. If you are still choosing a camera, start with our best dash cam guide. Ask us about your setup before connecting an unfamiliar accessory.
Parking recording needs suitable power. We suggest choosing your recording mode first, then matching a supply that can keep the camera powered as required. The camera must support that mode: installation cannot add Wi-Fi, GPS or a recording resolution the camera lacks.

| Method | What it connects to | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| CLA adapter | A compatible vehicle accessory socket | Camera and adapter requirements, and whether the socket stays powered when parked |
| Hardwire kit | The vehicle’s electrical system, as its instructions specify | Exact camera, kit, vehicle and professional-installation requirements |
| OBD power cable | A supported vehicle’s diagnostic port | Exact vehicle, camera and cable compatibility; a matching socket is not enough |
| Dedicated battery | A supported charging connection and camera power cable | Battery, input/output cable, charging conditions and camera requirements |
1. Power through a cigarette lighter adapter
For straightforward power from an accessory socket, consider a compatible cigarette lighter adapter, or CLA. Start with the adapter and supply voltage specified for your camera so the power connection matches the equipment.
Before relying on a socket while parked, find out how it behaves in your vehicle: some switch off with the vehicle, while others stay powered. We suggest reading about parking mode before relying on an accessory socket for recording while parked.
Plan the camera position with our dash cam mounting guide. Use the plug-and-play installation guide for the next steps; there is no single installation time that applies to every setup.
Read the CLA guide2. Use a compatible hardwire kit
Consider hardwiring if you want parking power and your exact camera, kit and vehicle support the intended recording mode. We can help you compare the equipment; hardwiring itself cannot guarantee continuous recording or prevent every battery problem.
Follow the exact installation instructions. Use the vehicle and accessory manuals for wire colors, fuse positions, fuse ratings and voltage-cutoff values; this overview does not specify them. Follow any professional-installation requirement. If you cannot establish a safe installation, ask a qualified installer before proceeding.
Browse hardwiring accessories once you know what your camera supports. For model-specific setup guidance, use the BlackVue Power Magic Pro and VIOFO 3-Wire Hardwire Kit. Match the named accessory to your exact camera and confirm current stock separately; these guides cannot establish either for another setup.
Read the hardwiring guide3. Check whether an OBD power cable is supported
We suggest considering an OBD power cable only when its manufacturer supports your exact vehicle and camera. A port that looks right is not enough to choose a cable; OBD cables are not universal.
Compare it with the hardwiring method, then match the cable version and camera model to your vehicle year, model and powertrain before connecting. Use that cable’s operating and battery-protection instructions, since another brand’s cable may work differently.
Read the IROAD OBD cable setup guide. Use that reference for the named accessory, not as confirmation that it fits every IROAD camera or vehicle.
Read the OBD guide4. Consider a dedicated dash cam battery
For a separate parking supply, consider a supported dedicated dash cam battery. We can help you match both sides of the setup: the battery’s vehicle charging connection and its camera output cable. Not every pack can charge from every accessory socket.
Tell us how long you park and which camera and mode you plan to use, so we can help you compare power options. Recording time still depends on the camera, mode, battery charge and conditions. A battery pack is not a fixed-duration guarantee. Follow the battery maker’s charging, temperature and mounting restrictions.
Compare dash cam battery options and read the battery installation guide. For guidance on the named models, use the Cellink NEO and BlackVue B-124 Ultra. Confirm current bundle contents separately, and use another battery’s own cable instructions rather than transferring these models’ requirements.
Read the battery guidePlan placement and cable routing before you begin
We advise settling placement before you begin, using the camera instructions and the manual for your exact vehicle and model year. Keep your view clear and respect restrictions around sensors, airbags and controls. Another vehicle’s photograph cannot establish a safe location in yours.
Check the recorded view before fixing the mount, then route and secure cables only as the relevant instructions allow. If anything is unclear, contact our product experts or an installer before removing trim or working on the electrical system.

Mounting and removal
Start with positioning and attachment guidance for your exact camera. When removing it, follow the mount maker’s instructions, including precautions for coated glass.

A discreet setup
If you want a less visible setup, we suggest choosing a discreet position only after confirming the recorded view and vehicle restrictions. Reduced visibility cannot guarantee that your camera or vehicle will not be targeted.

Does a power cable add Wi-Fi or GPS?
No. Those are camera features. Choose a supported power connection, then check the exact camera’s specifications and app instructions.
Will a cigarette lighter adapter record while I am parked?
That depends on the camera, adapter, socket behavior and settings. Some vehicle sockets switch off when the vehicle is off. Check your exact setup before relying on parking recording.
Is any OBD cable suitable if it fits the port?
No. Check the exact cable version, camera and vehicle compatibility before connecting it. The socket shape alone does not establish support.
Will a battery pack guarantee overnight recording?
No fixed duration applies to every setup. Camera power use, recording mode, battery charge and conditions affect how long recording continues.
Can I follow a photograph to choose a mounting position?
Use the camera and exact vehicle instructions. Another vehicle’s photograph cannot establish sensor, airbag or visibility clearance in yours.
