BlackVue DR970X Plus 4K UHD

Dash Cam In-Depth Review

As we welcome the new year, BlackVue began 2024 with the launch of the newest series of the DR970X Plus. Upgrading from the DR970X, which has first generation Sony STARVIS, the Plus version, first announced at 2023 SEMA, now carries an 8MP Sony STARVIS 2 IMX 678 sensor, making the 4K UHD competition between other manufacturers like Thinkware and Viofo even more exciting.

The DR970X Plus is expected to make waves, especially for those who value video quality, with the convenience of Cloud connectivity. In this article, let’s discover what else the new DR970X Plus has to offer.

Reasons to get the BlackVue DR970X Plus:

BlackVue DR970X Plus Design

Let's take a closer look at the different front camera options in the BlackVue DR970X Plus series. There are three versions: the standard one, the LTE variant, and the Box model. Here's what we noticed while exploring each one.

Starting with the standard front camera, it still has that sleek design we are used to, but with a fresh update. The matte black finish keeps it low-key, perfect for hiding behind your rearview mirror. What caught my attention was the change in shape – it's no longer a perfect circle. Instead, there's a flat strip with horizontal stripes, acting as heat sinks. This is a smart move to help with heat dissipation, making sure the camera stays cool. One thing to note is that the new design means the existing CPL filter won't fit due to the longer snout, and BlackVue has stated there won’t be a release of a new CPL filter.

Turning to the side, there are some practical changes. The USB type-c port for the LTE module, a port for the rear camera, and the microSD card slot are all there. What's interesting is the new Format button, replacing the old wifi button. It's a small change, but it makes using third-party cards much easier, a welcome improvement.

Now, let's talk about the LTE version. It's a bit bigger because it has the LTE module built-in. They ditched the Format button and the LTE module port since the LTE is built-in. While very slightly larger than the previous version, the size is basically the same, just with a darker black finish.

Moving on to the DR970X Box Plus, it's a bit different. The box shape is a departure from the usual design, going for a tamper-proof dash cam system. This is a big upgrade from the previous DR770X Box unit’s basic 1080p to the 4K system. We’re glad to see more variants of the most tamper-proof camera to date, now offering uncompromising image quality, along with uncompromising protection. Just keep in mind that it's only a 2-channel setup, and it doesn't come with the Bluetooth remote for manual recording. This is available with front and rear recording, or front and interior.

Now, why are the front cameras bigger? Well, it's to fit a much larger lens, which seriously improves the video quality. BlackVue seems to have focused on making sure the core function – capturing great video – is top-notch!

BlackVue DR970X Plus Image Quality and Recording Capabilities

The major upgrade in the DR970X Plus Series revolves around better image and video quality. The BlackVue DR970X Plus’ main camera has a new aperture lens, upgrading from F/2.8 to F/1.7, that captures more light resulting in clearer and more vibrantly coloured videos.

More importantly, they have introduced a new and improved image sensor for all DR970X Plus units - the 8MP Sony STARVIS 2 IMX 678 sensor at a 146-degree field of view. This new sensor allows the camera to record 4K UHD videos at 30 frames per second. For us, this move aligns with what other top brands have been doing in the industry last year – looking at the Thinkware U3000 and the VIOFO A229 Pro.

The DR970X Plus series also boasts a shutter speed three times quicker than its predecessors, giving more stable and smoother details in the dashcam videos, especially when capturing important elements like license plates and road signs. While these models may not feature High Dynamic Range (HDR) for a broader range of colors, BlackVue compensates by tuning the camera for accurate colors and optimal performance in low light. This ISP tuning also extends to the rear camera, although its specifications remain the same as older models, save for a rear viewing angle of 131°, an 8° decrease compared to previous model, due to a slightly different lens.

Another noteworthy improvement is the adoption of better video compression technology. The DR970X Plus camera now uses H.265 compression, which allows it to record at a higher speed of 60 megabits per second. While this leads to larger file sizes due to added detail, users have the flexibility to choose H.264 for smaller files, with a maximum recording speed of 25 megabits per second.

Considering these enhancements, the DR970X Plus has also addressed storage concerns by upgrading its capacity to support a 512GB SD card – a huge leap from the former 256GB limit. This new series also boasts the inclusion of Sub-Stream recordings, with smaller file sizes, which ensures smoother access via Wi-Fi or the Cloud.

Moreover, the DR970X Plus can also record even when the car engine is off – thanks to Parking mode activated through the free Hardwiring Kit. Similar to other BlackVue models, the DR970X Plus also offers Loop Recording, Intelligent Parking Mode, Impact/Motion Detection, and Time Lapse Recording. The DR970X Plus comes with a built-in voltage monitor to protect your vehicle battery, and a voltage cutoff timer can be set in the BlackVue app.

BlackVue DR970X Plus Cloud Connectivity

Connectivity is our favourite aspect of BlackVue. The BlackVue DR970X Plus models will have essential dash cam features like audio recording, advanced parking mode, built-in wifi, voice notifications, and built-in GPS.

However, what sets BlackVue apart is its unique approach to connectivity, such as Seamless Pairing. Unlike other cameras, the built-in Bluetooth of BlackVue models takes over the pairing process, allowing you to connect your dash cam to your phone in a matter of seconds. This means you won't have to leave the BlackVue app to connect to the camera's WiFi.

Of course, it also supports BlackVue’s staple advanced feature, the BlackVue Cloud. Connecting the BlackVue CM100G LTE module, using the built-in LTE with LTE models, or having any hotspot/Wi-Fi connection in the vehicle allows for a remote connection to the camera. This includes Remote Live View to check on the vehicle at any time, Push Notifications to keep you updated on events at the vehicle, Two-Way Communication through the camera, secure footage uploaded to the cloud and more. For us, this is a must if you leave your car unattended or if someone else drives your vehicle, keeping you informed, at all times.

Now, you might be wondering about the cost of the BlackVue Cloud services. BlackVue has recently dropped their plan rates significantly, with all Cloud plans, including the Free Plan, coming with everyday features, reserving only a few specific ones for fleets. The new Lite Plan lets you add an extra camera system to your cloud network for only $3, about half as much as it used to be.

Moreover, adding a second camera system to your cloud network is now easier than ever, as BlackVue has stated that with these new models, you can connect additional camera systems to a single BlackVue built-in LTE or LTE module DR970X Plus dash cam over the air. This makes your cloud connection all-in-one and the system a great choice for the always-connected 360 setup you’ve been dreaming about. Plus, it's just as easy to upgrade to it!

BlackVue DR970X Plus Compatibility and Upgradeability

There’s almost only good news when it comes to the upgradeability from previous BlackVue systems. The power cable and rear connecting cable are the exact same as previous X series models, and will be an easy swap out for any users.

On top of that, the rear camera itself is the same as DR970X and DR770X models, and is fully backwards compatible. This means that you’ll just need to replace the front camera and voila! You’re running a BlackVue 2-channel setup with the latest tech. Though the existing CPL filter won’t fit, and there aren’t currently plans for a new one.

Our Final Thoughts on the BlackVue DR970X Plus

After exploring the BlackVue DR970X Plus, we're genuinely impressed with its top-notch video quality and the addition of Sony STARVIS 2 sensors! This, along with the powerful BlackVue Cloud service, makes the DR970X Plus stand out in the competitive 4K Dash Cam market.

What's noteworthy is how BlackVue has listened to user feedback and made meaningful improvements. They've introduced a flexible H.265 codec, a dedicated format button, and the ability to establish a multi-channel cloud system using just one built-in LTE connection. To sweeten the deal, the DR970X Plus now comes with a reliable 2-year warranty from BlackVue, instilling confidence in its durability.

For those eager to get their hands on these new models, you can pre-order all versions of the BlackVue DR970X Plus at BlackboxMyCar. The 1-channel, 2-channel, and LTE variants will be shipping soon, while the IR and DR970X Box options are expected to be available by mid-February!
